Deep Space part 3 – motor tests under load

The weather has broken! I had to wait for the rain to finish before I could assemble the completed antenna mount complete with dish, and test the motors.

Here’s a video (there is no sound). It’s nearly 8 minutes long; the antenna starts pointing (roughly) at the horizon, rotates through 180 degrees, is taken up to the zenith and back again, rotates back through 360 degrees, then rotates to its starting position.

Right near the end I had to tighten the azimuth belt tensioner – it had slipped slightly. I will add captured washers to prevent slipping.

What fun! Next job is to try out an attitude sensor as position indicator. If it’s not good enough, I have the option to add encoders quite easily.
